A marketing engineer is a marketer who can build, deploy, and improve AI agents and workflows, and who still brings the taste and judgment that make marketing work. Part builder, part marketer.
The title is new. On September 30, 2026, Katie Deighton at The Wall Street Journal reported that some marketers are taking on "marketing engineer" as a title for work built around AI agents. Supporters say the label signals more discipline. Critics see a rebrand. We think the useful question is not the title. It is the function: who on your team builds the systems, and who decides what is good enough to ship.
How the role is being described
As the Journal reported, Profound co-founder James Cadwallader described the role at a marketing conference as two halves: someone technical enough to set up and adjust agents, paired with a marketer's human sense of what is good.
In practice, a marketing engineer:
Builds and maintains the agents and automations that produce, distribute, and measure marketing work
Sets the rules: brand voice, what the tools can see, and who approves what
Reviews output with a marketer's eye before anything reaches a customer
Keeps improving the system as the tools change
A naming note: "marketing engineering" also names an older academic field. That is a different thing. In this post, we mean the builder-marketer role above.
What marketing engineers actually build
Content pipelines with a human approval step
The clearest example is a content pipeline. Agents draft, design, and schedule. A person approves. Our Content Engine is a managed version of this: AI agents that write, design, film, publish, and optimize content, with your sign-off before anything goes live.
10 AI signals that matter for your business. Every week. No hype.
We documented the architecture in The AI Content Engine Playbook: triggers in n8n, generation primarily with Claude, branded visuals in Placid, and human review and scheduling. The Refresh Miami case study shows what that looked like for Refresh Miami: an 80% reduction in content costs, near-daily output, and a human editor who reviews everything before it goes live.
Visibility in AI search
B2B buyers can ask AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews who to work with. Making your expertise easy for those answer engines to understand is part of the marketing engineer's work. We cover the basics in our guide to generative engine optimization.
Automation across the rest of marketing
The Journal's examples go beyond content: marketers building AI systems for jobs like competitor analysis and personalized ads. The pattern is the same each time. Find a repeated job, build an agent or workflow for it, and keep a person accountable for the output.
The title matters less than what ships
The Journal also noted that Figma advertised for a marketing engineer and framed success around AI agents deployed and time saved. That is a useful scorecard whether or not anyone on your team changes their title.
Questions worth asking about your own team:
Which agents or workflows are live today, not just piloted?
How much time do they save each week?
Who approves the output, and what are the safe-use rules?
What did the team stop doing by hand?
If the answers are thin, a new title will not fix it. Building the habit will.
How a marketing team gets there
We help companies grow this function from the marketers they already have. The path we use:
Foundation. The Ultimate Prompt covers what the tools can do, what not to paste, and who owns the output. Our Ultimate AI Prompt Workshop for Mastercard trained 150 Mastercard employees.
Practice together. A half-day team workshop on work the marketing team already does, in a closed session with your files and your rules.
Go deeper.Corporate AI training when one session is not enough: multi-day training or a month of follow-through.
Lead it. A 1-day executive bootcamp for the leaders deciding whether and how to build this function.
Build it in-house or run it as a managed engine
There are two options, and they can work together.
Build in-house when you have marketers who want to build and the time for them to learn. Training and a buildathon give them a start, and the systems stay with your team.
Run it as a managed service when you need output now. With the Content Engine, we build and run the agent pipeline and your team approves what ships.
Either way, keep a person with marketing judgment in the approval seat. That is the marketer half of the role, and it stays human.
Who we are
We are a practitioner-led AI innovation lab based in Miami, with strategic advisory and managed AI services alongside our training, plus a Miami AI community. We are trusted by the Miami Marlins, Mastercard, and TradeStation. Gianni D'Alerta has spent 30 years designing and building, and Gianni and Ralph Quintero are AI Innovation Fellows at FIU's Center for Leadership.
We are not selling a new title. We build the systems and train the people who run them.
FAQ: Marketing engineers
What is a marketing engineer?
A marketing engineer is a marketer who builds, deploys, and improves AI agents and workflows for marketing work, and who applies marketing taste and judgment to the output. Part builder, part marketer.
Is a marketing engineer the same as marketing engineering?
No. "Marketing engineering" is also the name of an older academic field. The newer marketing engineer function is about building and running AI agents and automations inside a marketing team.
Do marketing engineers need to code?
Not always. Tools like n8n for workflows and Lovable for prototypes let marketers build without starting from a blank code file. What matters more is understanding how the pieces connect and where a person needs to approve the output.
How do you measure a marketing engineer's work?
Look at what ships: agents and workflows that are live, time saved each week, the quality of the output, and which manual jobs the team no longer does by hand.
How does a marketing team start?
Pick one repeated job, such as social posts or a weekly report. Get the team on a shared foundation, practice on that job together, then build a first workflow with a human approval step. We can help you scope it in a strategy session.
What to do next
Bring one marketing job your team repeats every week and the tools you already pay for. We will help you decide whether to build it in-house, run it as a managed engine, or start with training. Book a strategy session.
